IP CCTV Surveillance Systems
IP CCTV is the latest line in evolution of CCTV Surveillance. With networks and the Intenet becoming prevelant in everyday life, it was only a matter of time before this architecture was applied to video and CCTV devices.
IP CCTV Cameras have now been developed that act as devices on a computer network with their own IP address and Intelligence on board to allow processing at the camera. It has also helped that compression technology has advanced allowing video to be transmitted alongside regular network traffic making IP CCTV the platform for the on-going future.
IP Video Concept
IP CCTV and IP Video is based on the idea that each individual component is part of a TCP/IP network. Each camera has its own IP address allowing greater flexibility. IP Cameras do not need to be cabled back to the controlling equipment, they only need to be connected to closest Network location.
IP CCTV differ from traditional CCTV in that the componenets are all network based. The control and administration function comes from Software running on a PC server anywhere in the network. IP Cameras are not directly attached to any hardware. Storage of the images can go to the same server but can also be routed anywhere on the network to a Network storage device. It is even possible to have cameras that have built in administration and intelligence such that no other components are required.
IP Cameras on their own are a vast step up from their analogue predessors. Each device works seperately with its own processing power and intelligence. Activity detection can be setup at the Camera rather than the controlling hardware limiting the network traffic and saving on the processing power at the control equipment. The images quality is also far superior to analogue systems as it is purely digital as well as an end to interlace problems.
IP CCTV becomes a service that runs in parallel with other network components such as email, databases, Word Processing, Internet Access. With IP CCTV it is also possible to view and administer from a web browser.
Advantages over Traditional Systems
There are many significant advantages over traditional CCTV systems.
Usage or Re-usage of the existing network infastructure.
By using the exisiting network infastructure installation time should be reduced as well as the on-going maintenance costs. If you also think about this with a viewpoint to future growth of the system. By using the network any new cameras need only to be connected to the nearest access point. Traditionally a new cable would have to be run from the new camera to the control equipment. IP CCTV by default provides advanced flexibility.
Control Multiple Sites from a single location
IP CCTV Systems can now be designed that allow communication, administration and Monitoring of several sites from a remote location. This is especially useful for larger multi-site organisations that would like to consolidate security functions.
Tight Integration into Other Systems such as Access Control, Intruder Alarms
Being based on Software makes integration easier. This offers clients single click access to the information from many systems pulled together into a single accessable libary of information. For example in Access Control Integration it is possible to click on a door open event and view the associated CCTV image of the person opening the door. Further details can be found on our Access Control page.
Intelligence at the front 'Coal Face' rather the back end.
IP Cameras are more intelligent than their analogue predessors. Movement detection and camera setup is stored with the camera rather than at the main control equipment. This allows savings on the bandwidth and also saves the main control unti having to do all the work.
Improved Picture Quality
By using digital cameras, digital images and digitial transmission the quality of images is far higher thean previous systems.
Software Controls & Access
Using software control it is possible to restrict access to areas of buildings and also to specific camera's. This can be done for single users or for groups of users
Control Room monitoring and Event management still possible.
With IP systems it is still possible to have control room monitoring from certified ARC (Alarm Receiving Center). They can provide 24hr, 365 days cover to your premises using event monitoring and perimeter protection.
Software upgrade path rather than hardware
With traditional systems the limiting factor was the number of cameras that can be connected to the control equipment. This is no longer the case. Cameras are independant on the network and do not connect to control equipment. If there is central monitoring software then additional license can be purchased or software upgrade performed. This is no expensive replacement of hardware !
Hybrid networks will allow analogue systems to run alongside IP systems in complete harmony. With digital converters it is also possible to utilise an Analogue cameras into an IP network. The converter will provide the IP address for the camera. This can be useful where an existing site needs to be changed to IP. All the existing cameras and network can be utilised saving time and money. You can gain the benefits of an IP CCTV system using existing cameras saving time and money !
