What is IP CCTV?

The video surveillance market has continued to change as older analogue systems become obsolete and a shift towards network video has grown. Eventually, it is anticipated that All IP Video Management Solutions will replace VCR, DVR and even current Hybrid NVR Solutions. On an All IP Video Management Solution, the benefits to the end user offer many more benefits than any other system on today's market:

IP CCTV Cameras have now been developed that act as devices on a computer network with their own IP address and Intelligence on board to allow processing at the camera. Compression technology has also advanced allowing video to be transmitted alongside regular network traffic making IP CCTV the platform for the on-going future.

How does IP CCTV work?

The diagram above shows a typical example of an IP CCTV running both existing cameras (utilising convertors) and new IP cameras. IP CCTV and IP Video is based on the idea that each individual component is part of a TCP/IP network. Each camera has its own IP address allowing greater flexibility. IP Cameras do not need to be cabled back to the controlling equipment, they only need to be connected to closest Network location.

IP CCTV differs from traditional CCTV in that the componenets are all network based. The control and administration function is provided from Software running on a PC server that can be positioned anywhere in the network. IP Cameras are not directly attached to any hardware. Storage of the images can go to the same server but can also be routed anywhere on the network to a Network Storage Device. IP CCTV becomes a service that runs in parallel with other network components such as email, databases, Word Processing, Internet Access.
