The Lighthouse and King Communications restore security to Scotland’s Centre for Architecture, Design and the City.
The Lighthouse in Glasgow, recently called upon the services of King Communications and Security Ltd to convert their CCTV system into a state-of-the-art IP CCTV network system. The Lighthouse, opened by HM the Queen in 1999, serves as Scotland’s Centre for Architecture, Design and the City.
Operating as a charitable trust, and as such an iconic building in Glasgow City Centre, it is important that every measure is taken to secure its historical value, holding some of Mackintosh’s most prized pieces of work including one of his chairs which is reputed to be worth more than a quarter of a million pounds alone. King Communications were able to install a solution that met the requirements of The Lighthouse and caused minimal disruption of the infrastructure.
“It’s made a massive change to our infrastructure, in the immediacy of checking on all parts of the building, and the extended data storage,” says Angus Stewart, The Lighthouse IT manager. “We hold exhibitions valued into thousands of pounds and are now able to install additional cameras at key points at any time.”
With over 1 million visitors since the opening of The Lighthouse in 1999 and anywhere between 15 – 20 exhibitions being held in the building’s many function suites each year, this has been an incredibly important project to maintain one of Glasgow’s most iconic buildings – something that King Communications have been more then happy to have worked on.
Martyn King, of King Communications, summarised: “We were able to provide The Lighthouse with a very comprehensive upgrade to their existing surveillance system without throwing out their existing CCTV infrastructure and whilst using the buildings already well-specified network infrastructure. The solution they now have offers an easy upgrade path to full IP-Surveillance and is both highly scalable and effective today. Options like remote monitoring via a PDA are now easy to implement if The Lighthouse’s management wants to increase security levels during specific exhibitions for example.”
Overall King Communications has undergone massive change as a company, during the last two years they have re-branded, and re-positioned itself as a market innovator-leading the way in the IP CCTV market.
